Skyservice cancels most flights from Toronto

Skyservice Airlines, which flies on behalf of tour operators, is shutting down.

The charter carrier will announce Wednesday that a receiver will be appointed to oversee the winding down of the debt-laden company, industry insiders said Wednesday.

The closing of Skyservice comes after Sunwing Travel Group, which has its own planes, merged recently with Signature Vacations. Sources say Sunwing had held talks with Skyservice for an early cancellation of the charter airline’s deal to continue flying on behalf of Signature until 2013.

There have been concerns about the likely loss of the Skyservice-Signature contract in 2012 or earlier, an industry source said. Sunquest Vacations and Signature were the two-largest customers of the charter airline.

Skyservice, a charter airline which flies to Canada, the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico and Europe, may have gone out of business. The Skyservice charter airline has cancelled almost all of its scheduled flights out of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

The Canadian Press has been unable to reach Skyservice for comment and a spokeswoman for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority has referred all questions to the airline. The GTAA’s website does indicate, however, the cancellation of five flights set to depart today. Two flights that were scheduled to arrive at Pearson from Punta Cana and Mexico City arrived on time, according to the airport authority’s website.

Messages have been left for the president and chief executive of Skyservice, Rob Giguere, and his assistant. So far, the company hasn’t made a statement to the media or on its website.

According to its website, the airline was founded in 1986. It has more than 1,200 employees and operates more than 20 commercial aircraft to destinations in Canada, the United States, Caribbean, Mexico and Europe. Its fleet includes the Airbus A330, A320 and the Boeing B757.

The Museum of Clothing is a must for those interested in any aspect of clothing. The collections of the Museum of Clothing comprise over 160,000 garments covering six centuries of Spanish fashion, though there are some much older items, among them fragments of Coptic cloth and Hispano-Muslim pieces.

The permanent exhibition of the Museum of Clothing shows up to 600 items at any one time, rotating them frequently both to protect them and to allow returning visitors to appreciate the breadth and diversity of the collection. It is arranged chronologically in the Museum of Clothing, in 14 spaces, among which are two outstanding monographic rooms, one covering regional costume, the other containing pieces by Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, son of the painter, whose creations were worn by the likes of Isadora Duncan.

Other rooms of the Museum of Clothing cover costume from the Enlightenment and the castizo (Madrid’s working classes); early 19th-century French influences; Romanticism; belle époque, the avant-garde, post-Civil War fashion and the modern era.

A room of the Museum of Clothing is dedicated to the great couturier Balenciaga and another to Spanish haute couture. Visitors to the Museum of Clothing can learn about how clothes are made in ‘didactic areas’ and a further exhibition space shows temporary displays, the first showcasing a century of Vogue photography. Facilities include a reading/internet room, bookshop, and café-restaurant.

The convent of the Descalzas Reales (‘Royal Barefoot Nuns’) is the most complete 16th-century building in Madrid and still houses a cloistered community. The convent of the Descalzas Reales was originally built as a palace for Alonso Gutiérrez, treasurer of Charles V, but was converted into a convent in 1556-64 by Antonio Sillero and Juan Bautista de Toledo after Philip II’s widowed sister Joanna of Austria decided to become a nun. Founded with royal patronage, the convent of the Descalzas Reales became the preferred destination of the many widows, younger daughters and other women of the royal family and high aristocracy of Spain who entered religious orders. Hence the convent of the Descalzas Reales also acquired an extraordinary collection of works of art – paintings, sculptures, tapestries and objets d’art – given as bequests by the novices’ families. Equally lavish is the baroque decoration of the building of the convent of the Descalzas Reales, belying its sternly austere façade, with a grand painted staircase, frescoed ceilings and 32 chapels, only some of which can be visited.

The largest non-Spanish contingents in its art collection are Italian, with Titian, Bernardino Luini, Angelo Nardi and Sebastiano del Piombo, and Flemish, with Breughel (an Adoration of the Magi), Joos Van Cleve and Rubens. The Descalzas is also an exceptional showcase of Spanish baroque religious art, with works by Gaspar Becerra, Zurbarán, Claudio Coello and even a tiny painting attributed to Goya. In addition, as you walk around you can catch glimpses of the nuns’ courtyard vegetable garden, which has remained virtually unchanged since the convent was built, and is closed to the public. The monastery was seen by very few until the 1980s, when it was restored and partially opened as a museum. It can be visited only with official tours, which leave every 20 minutes and last around 50 minutes. Frustratingly, the guides rarely speak English, there is no printed information about the convent, and the paintings are not labelled. It is still an enjoyable place to visit, though, for the sheer sumptuousness of its artworks and fittings.

Visit South India Tours – Malabar Trail

Day 1: Mumbai

Following your arrival in Mumbai, transfer to the hotel.

Day 2 : Mumbai

Morning at leisure. In the afternoon a tour of Mumbai will introduce some of the great sights of this commercial centre.

Day 3 : Kochi

Take the early morning flight to Cochin, arriving at your hotel there in mid-morning and spending the afternoon sightseeing. The Chinese cantilevered fishing nets, Jewish synagogues, Portuguese churches, Hindu temples and Dutch fort all make the point that this is a very cosmopolitan city.

Day 4 : Kochi – Munnar

Visit Mattupetty Lake, situated at a distance of 15 km from Munnar, Rajamala is home to almost half the population of Nilgiri tahrs (a rare mountain goat). Overnight stay in Abad copper castle, Munnar.

Day 6: Periyar

The morning drive takes you south along the Ghats, past the tea plantations of Devikulam to Lake Periyar and its renowned wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary surrounds picturesque Periyar lake. In the afternoon you will take to the water, for game viewing.

Day 7 : Kumarakom

In the morning you drive down through tea and then rubber plantations, interspersed with small cardamom, coffee, ginger and pepper-growing estates to tranquil Kumarakom, adjacent to the bird sanctuary on Lake Vembanad. The afternoon at leisure.

Day 8 : Houseboat cruise

Enjoy a comfortable Kettuvallam houseboat for a day cruise. These simply furnished but comfortable houseboats are equipped with a living room and bedroom (en suite bathroom) and are powered by local oarsmen.

Day 9 : Varkala

After disembarking at Quilon in the morning you drive the short distance south to the delightful seaside town of Varkala. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 10 : Varkala – Kovalam

Proceed to Kovalam. This internationally renowned beach has been a favourite haunt for tourists. Kovalam consists of three adjacent crescent beaches. The southern most, known as the Lighthouse Beach , is the most popular.

Day 11 : Kovalam

Relaxed day at Kovalam. Enjoy the sun, golden sand and the beach.

Day 12 : Trivandrum – Mumbai

Afternoon drive to Trivandrum for the flight to Mumbai, arriving late afternoon and transferring to the international airport for your late-night flight to home.
